Nail Care Tips

Nail Care is important when it comes to personal grooming. Suppose a woman has applied makeup carefully and attired herself with most fashionable clothes, but has been careless about her nails. How do you think she would look like then? Won't it be a bit shabby?

It happens in our everyday life. Indeed it would be better if we give some more attention to nail care.

Here are some essential tips on nail care which would definitely help you a lot.
Nail Care

* Take care of your nails between salon visits.
* File your nails regularly and always keep them short.
* If your nails are exposed to chemicals, moisture, water, etc, it could result in split peeling nails or allergic reaction. Wear rubber gloves to protect your nails or coat them with some cotton.
* Never use something like scissors for both for infected and non infected nails.

Artificial Nails

* Always get artifical nails applied by a good technician.
* Artificial nails would need manicure or refilling every two or three weeks.
* If you decide to remove them, appropriate solution is not difficult. Even when the artificial nails are removed, natural nails remain in the same condition.

Nail Tip Design

* Using glue could damage your nails, even if it is applied on polish layers.
* Ensure the last polish layer is dry before applying the next. Use layers of different colours.
* Keep on experimenting with nail tip design. You could use Chinese characters, apply small fake tattoos or create different patterns.
* You could use band-aids for applying design. Cut band-aids and stick them on top of a dry coat of polish. Contrasting color would look good.

For Acryllic Nails

* Keep your acrylic nail polished. Thick polish could cause bubbles and uneven application. So first add a drop of polish and then dilute it thinner.
* Before applying any acrylic layer, clean your nails. If the nails have remnants of cuticle oil, old polish or lotion, the new polish would not apply itself properly.
* For avoiding bubbles, remove the excess from the brush along the bottle's border.

• Lay a base coat to protect your nails and in the process, help helps the acrylic layer to stick in proper way.
• Use a nail stick to clean up the acrylic on the skin around the fingernail.
• Seal the polish with a top coat to camouflage possible bubbles or streaks.
• Seal the polish with a top coat to camouflage possible streaks or bubbles. It also adds shine.
• Allow enough time to the nails to dry.

How to Treat and Prevent Broken Nails

We use them as makeshift screwdrivers or pliers. We drown them in dishwater and coat them with chemicals. No wonder our nails so easily break. Everything from a dry climate to constant immersion in hot water can cause nails to peel, split, and crack. And the pain can be considerable, especially if the nail splits to the quick.

Here are some tips you can consider to help you to speed your healing process and for fast pain-relief.

Clip broken nails quickly. If you break a nail, cut it as short as you can; this will keep the break from extending farther down your nail.

Bandage the break. . .maybe. If your nail is torn and raw, apply an antibiotic ointment to help prevent infection, then cover the nail with a bandage. No need to bandage a less-serious split. A bandage will hold in heat and moisture, which can be detrimental.

Clip nails correctly. Cut your nails straight across. Rounding the edges can cause an ingrown nail.

Don gloves. When you are doing household chores, wear heavy cotton gloves for dry work such as gardening and vinyl gloves with cotton gloves underneath for wet work such as washing dishes. Your hands will sweat under the vinyl, and the cotton gloves will absorb the sweat.

Use an ocean of lotion. Massage your nails with plain petroleum jelly or a hand cream that contains 10 percent urea. Trapping the moisture within the nails will help make them less brittle.

Ration the nail polish remover. Touch up chipped polish instead of removing it completely. The reason? Nail polish remover contains strong solvents that can make nails bone-dry, leaving them vulnerable to splits and cracks.

Try biotin. The vitamin biotin, available at drugstores and health food stores, has shown to strengthen nails. It is recommended taking 2.5 milligrams of biotin a day. But do not expect overnight improvement. It may take six months to see results.

A nail that is broken seldom requires medical attention. But a nail that is injured by a slamming car door, for example, can be serious. You should see a doctor if you develop symptoms of infection, such as swelling, a fever, or the formation of pus, or if your nail is extremely painful. If there is a lot of swelling or pain, you could have a broken bone, but not a broken nail.

Also consult a doctor if you see blood under your nail. Go to the emergency room within an hour to release the pressure beneath the nail. If the pressure is not released, it can damage the nail root. But do not be alarmed if your nail turns black. It probably looks worse than it is.

NAIL CARE AND MANICURE

Be kind to your nails

A diet rich in calcium would assure strong and healthy nails. But if your nails are basically soft, buy any good nail strengthener that is available in the market and apply it on your nails. But do take care of the cuticles while doing so, as we do not want them to harden too.

The cuticles protect the nails and require attention too. Do not damage them by pushing them back constantly. If at all they are in bad shape, gently apply oil or a good cuticle cream to heal the rough edges.

It would be a good idea to keep your nails fairly short to avoid breakage or any other sort of damage. Be especially careful when trying to open tin cans or bottle tops, as your nails are obviously quite delicate and meant for better things.

Ridged or flaky nails may be the result of washing your hands in hard water or the use of a particular detergent. It would be a good idea to use a cream polish remover in such cases or better still, give your nails a breather and do not apply polish for awhile.

A ready reckoner for a manicure

1. Never ever use metal implements for a manicure.
2. Start by removing the old varnish with a good nail polish remover.
3. Take an emery board and use the rough surface to shape the nails. But do it gently and carefully so as not to file down the sides too steeply. Use the other side to smoothen out the ragged edges. Always remember to hold the emery board at a slight angle to the surface of the nail to prevent flaking and file in one direction only from each side to the centre.
4. Now put your fingertips in a soapy solution and scrub gently. But do not soak them. Make sure that you dry them thoroughly after they feel smooth. Also be careful not to damage fingernails when wet.
5. It is now time to use a cuticle cream or lotion which should be applied gently around the cuticle. You can do this with the help of an ear bud or a cotton wool tipped orange stick. Apply the cream gently, as this is the most delicate portion of the nail.
6. Now clean the nails once again with a good nail polish remover.
7. Then apply a base coat and give it time to dry completely.
8. Next you can apply a good varnish of your choice. To do this, take out the brush from the nail polish bottle and make an outline of a half-moon on your nail. Then spread the colour in deft broad strokes from the beginning of the half-moon to the tip of the nail. Use the same method for all the nails. Remember that practice will make you perfect.
9. Remove a thin hairline of colour with the help of your thumbnail, from the edges to prevent chipping.
10. After the polish is completely dry, you can apply a topcoat for added gloss and protection.
11. Lastly, use a good hand cream or a hand and body lotion to massage your hands right from the tips of your fingers to your wrists, as you would smooth on a pair of gloves. Wipe off any excess cream.
12. Enjoy your brand new pair of hands.
